Detained at Work

"And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God."

-Romans 12:2

I previously worked in the healthcare field where I worked in tandem with my hiring manager, an astute woman, with a husband and family from the southern region of the United States.  My hometown is the upper midwest region of the states, Minnesota.

Both of our roles were so busy that she often remarked at the end of the day, it’s so sad that we hardly have time to even chat with one another because we're so busy all day with patients, calls, and scheduling which all had to be conducted daily.

We were able to chat some and occasionally here and there but not much. I was always attentive whenever she did feel the need to share personal stories. But mostly it was daily doing our best and doing our jobs. I don’t even recall ever sharing with her that I was a Christian let alone having ample opportunity to share with her about the goodness of my Lord and the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

Therefore, it was even more interesting that on more than one occasion she told me directly and seriously, "I know that you’re not human honey,” (spoken with her southern drawl dialect) "you're not going to fool me." To which I seriously replied back to her on those occasions that her logic just wasn’t true and asked what made you think I wasn’t a human? She replied, "I just know it." God sent you here for me." She further said that nothing I said would convince her otherwise. Trust me, this woman wasn’t out of her mind, but rather, had this (non-truth) fixated in her heart.  She proceeded with, “you’re an angelic being I just know it and don’t ever try to leave me or this job.”   After a no-win back in forth, I let her believe whatever she wanted to believe.  After all, we had jobs to do and we were getting paid to accomplish our tasks.

Fast forward... over the course of time, I was hired on the spot and had accepted a better paying job offer which meant I would be leaving my job in healthcare. Prior to me giving my notice I had a couple of individuals intercede on my behalf that I would come out–alive and well!

Initially, as suspected my notice wasn't taken well. Therefore, I was intent on listening to the voice of the Holy Spirit within, and in so doing I was able to remain focused on making sure job specifics were wrapped up as I prepared to exit. I kept calm and respectful, even though all the while she opted to act beside herself. She could finally see that I wasn't going to argue with her, nor did I need to answer to her on whatever I personally chose to do. So she stormed off to her front desk area and didn't know whether to cry, be angry, or just what to do. She asked me why? I didn't have to explain myself or any reason as to why. It was, what it was.

The main door was in her area and I needed to go out in the area to gather my things and not knowing what I was going to walk into thank God it was then that she extended her hand out to me while at the same time just gazing. Her eyes were sparkling as she stared directly in my eyes and with such humility, admiration and respect she asked... "can I shake your hand?" Followed by her final words,"it was my pleasure to know you."

To this day, I don't know, or even try to understand what that was about.

But I do know this, that the bible says that our steps are ordered by the Lord,

Psalm 37:23.  May my God, the God of Israel, become the same LORD of her

and her household is my prayer.

"I no longer live, but the Messiah lives in me, and the life that I am now living in this body I live by the faithfulness of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

Galatians 2:20
